Friends with benefits are a term that has been bantered around for about twenty years now.  What this refers to when friends cross that line of just being friends to adding sex to their activities as friends.  This does not mean that they are now in a committed relationship, just that they have agreed to have sex with each other occasionally.

There are those who argue that sex is way too causal these days, with people just having sexual encounters with each other with no real commitment or sometime even no real care taken to protect themselves for either pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.

There is a romantic comedy with the same name; Friends with Benefits which stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis.  Like the name suggests, they made a go of having sex with each other without the commitment of a relationship.  Their co-stars included Woody Harrelson, Jenna Elfman, Andy Samberg, Emma Stone, and Patricia Clarkson.
